Imprisoned Spirits, Who Are They?

Imprisoned Spirits, Who Are They?

“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.” 2 Peter 2:4-5 KJV

God’s word says there are angels that sinned and were thrown down to hell in chains of darkness. And they are there reserved for another judgment from God! Notice in the same context of Scripture the destruction of the ancient world in Noah’s day by the flood is mentioned. Interestingly that’s when the angel’s sinned. Let’s see what these spirits did in the days of Noah. And are there any other references of them found in scripture.

GENESIS CHAPTER 6

“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That THE SONS OF GOD SAW THAT THE DAUGHTERS OF MEN THAT THEY WERE FAIR; AND THEY TOOK THEM WIVES OF ALL WHICH THEY CHOSE. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when THE SONS OF GOD CAME IN UNTO THE DAUGHTERS OF MEN, AND THEY BARE CHILDREN TO THEM, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6:1-8 KJV

Yes, you read right, the sons of God, spirits or angels, came to earth and had sexual relations with women. They did this with any they chose. These women also had children by them who were the old powerful men of fame and renown. They were the celebrities of their day. They were also bullies and tyrants in the earth. In fact the world got so bad as a result of what these angels did and their hybrid offspring that God decided to wipe out everybody. That is everyone except Noah and his family.

Are there any other references in the Bible of these imprisoned spirits? There sure is:

“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” Jude 1:6 KJV

There it is again in the Bible book of Jude. These spirits left (voluntarily) their first estate or home in heaven. The only place where we see in God’s word that this happened is in Genesis chapter 6 when the sons of God came to earth and had sex with women. And Jude 1:6 is talking about the same angels mentioned in 2 Peter 2:4. Compare the verses:

“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment.” 2 Peter 2:4 KJV

The scriptures match perfectly. Jude 1:6 though gives us further insight into what they did: “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation [heaven].” And Genesis chapter 6 gives us more details as to what they did when they left heaven. They came to earth, had sex with women, and brought about a very wicked hybrid offspring that polluted the earth.

As already stated these angels that sinned in this way were put in everlasting chains of darkness, and cast into hell, where they are awaiting another judgment of God. Are there any other references made of these imprisoned spirits in God’s word? There sure is:

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits—to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water.” 1 Peter 3:18-20 NIV

There are those imprisoned spirits again. And this text in 1 Peter 3 confirms that their disobedience occured in the days of Noah, matching up perfectly with what Genesis chapter 6 says happened.

SO WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and HIS ANGELS WERE CAST OUT WITH HIM.” Revelation 12:7-9 KJV

The Bible says Satan and these angels were cast out of heaven by Michael and his angels after they lost a war in heaven. They didn’t leave their estate or heavenly home voluntarily like the spirits that sinned in Noah’s day. There is a distinct difference between leaving a place, and being kicked out of it. Also the imprisoned spirits we’ve been talking about are said to be in hell, in chains of darkness. The wicked spirits mentioned in Revelation chapter 12 were cast out into the earth or among mankind. One set of angels lost their home because they left it voluntarily and sinned with women in Noah’s day. Another set of angels lost their home by being kicked out of heaven after losing a war fought against Michael and his angels. Are you seeing it? These are two different sets of rebellious angels. Some are in prison, in hell, in chains of darkness. And the others are cast out into the earth among mankind.

How interesting it is that Jesus said when He returns it will be the same way it was in Noah’s day. And how interesting that you had evil spirits doing things they shouldn’t be doing on earth then just as you have deceiving spirits doing things they shouldn’t be doing on earth now. So much material has been produced about fallen angels, Nephilim, giants, hybrids, etcetera. And I’m not saying none of it is useful for godly teaching. Only let’s make sure we don’t miss the main reason why Jesus warned that His return will be like it was in the days of Noah:

“When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. “Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left. Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left. “So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. “A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them. If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward. I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns. But what if the servant is evil and thinks, ‘My master won’t be back for a while,’ and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk? The master will return unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 24:37-51 NLT

That Old Ancient Lie

That Old Ancient Lie

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:4-5 KJV

Throughout history people have opposed God. Men have been obsessed with becoming or believing they are gods themselves. This comes from that old ancient lie you just read the Devil told the first humans Adam and Eve. Despite God’s dire warning not to eat from a certain tree they listened to Satan and did it anyway. (Genesis 2:16-17) Things didn’t go well for them after that, and it won’t for the many who buy into Satan’s lies today. (Matthew 7:13-14)

“Ye shall be as gods,” the devil told them. But of course there was one condition: they must break God’s one and only law he gave them in order to achieve their godhood. How sad Adam and Eve must have felt when they saw they had been duped by the serpent. How miserable they were when they saw there was no way to get back what they had lost. They lost their close relationship with God their creator. Their whole world was turned upside down. Everything was once easy. Now it was hard. They were exiled from their beautiful paradise home in Eden. One of their children brutally murdered the other. They also lost their lives. Things got worse too for all of their children; the many generations that would come after them, the entire human race!

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man [Adam], and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.” Romans 5:12 NIV

IT’S STILL CIRCULATING

That old ancient lie is still circulating: “Ye shall not surely die.” The lie that you can live forever apart from Almighty God is still being told. “Ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened,” is still widespread. If you partake of this or that you will be able to see with your eyes of understanding, you will have superior knowledge, you will become more aware, more enlightened. Sounds familiar? And let’s not forget the ultimate superpower: “Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Wow, I will be a god! I’m my own boss! No one can tell me what’s good or bad, right or wrong. I already know this because I am a god! Do you see how much that old ancient lie has permeated our society today?

THEY’RE HERE

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Revelation 12:7-9 KJV

It’s interesting how when people love something so much they bring it close to them. People have loved the Devil’s lies so much they now have the privilege of living with the father of all lies. (John 8:44) Yes, Satan and his angelic followers were evicted; kicked out of heaven, and are now on earth. That’s why our world is so messed up:

“Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” Revelation 12:12 KJV

In keeping with his character the Devil is deceiving (lying to) the whole world. And he’s using that same old ancient lie he used before: ‘You can be a god.’ You can become much more enlightened (illuminated). Know for yourself what is good and evil, right and wrong. And achieving eternal life is possible. All of this can be yours without the help of the one they call God, or Jesus Christ. In fact you must break their laws (the same thing he told Eve and Adam) in order to achieve your godhood. Satan’s lie sounds a lot like what we call metaphysics. And it has been interwoven into science, religion, education, entertainment, etcetera.

This lie the Devil tells is killing many, just as it killed Adam and Eve. No wonder Jesus calls the Devil a murderer, and the father of lies. (John 8:44) He has really made it attractive in these last days. With the help of his human minions (many of whom are so misled) he’s got people believing all they have to do is change or rewrite their genetic code (DNA) then they can live forever. “Ye shall not surely die,” Satan says through them just as he spoke through a serpent in Eden. Adam and Eve found out the hard way he lied to them. Many will find out they too have been duped. There are certain things that cannot be achieved apart from God. There is only one way to receive eternal life. Of course Satan does not want you to know this way. Hence he has done and is doing everything in his power to make that way seem unattractive and will keep feeding you counterfeit lies. Reject them! Learn the truth about who God is and accept His one and only way to eternity:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV

Jesus said:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 NIV

“Go”

“Go”

“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:16-20 KJV

Are we any different than Jesus’ early disciples? Do we not doubt too sometimes? Fear of being wrong, fear of men, and other fears sometimes creep in. Let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen. None of us is a powerhouse of faith 24/7 365 days of the year. But if we do not give up in the good fight of faith we eventually gird up our loins and do what the master commands. Jesus commands us to, “Go;” and make disciples of all the nations. To teach them everything He has commanded us to do. Collectively as Christ’s church; his body of believers, this is being done.

Though we are not to throw pearls to swine (Matthew 7:6) nor correct mockers (Proverbs 9:7-9) we are to instruct wise people who will be able to teach others. (2 Timothy 2:2) There are many open doors to do this great work. One of them is the internet. Brothers and sisters are teaching and spreading God’s truth through videos, chat rooms, blogs, email, etcetera. Many are FEARLESSLY spreading the gospel this way. We know there’s a lot of junk on the internet. But we don’t have to be a part of that. We can be one of the true few that are making an impact for God’s kingdom by teaching and spreading the truth through this medium.

FEAR OF MAN

““And I say to you, My friends, don’t fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the One to fear: Fear Him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the One to fear! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!” Luke 12:4-7 HCSB

Telling the God honest truth will not make us popular. Lying will. But speaking God’s message truthfully pleases Him. The man or woman who does this has the King Of Kings as their Father and friend. To fearlessly tell the truth in the face of growing opposition is not something you and I can do alone. We need God’s Spirit. Pray to Him for His Spirit to help us fearlessly proclaim the gospel. The apostle Paul knew this and even asked others to pray for Him; that he would boldly speak God’s message:

“Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known WITH BOLDNESS the mystery of the gospel.” Ephesians 6:19 HCSB

Today there are constant threats being made towards those who don’t agree with the direction the world is going in. Simply not agreeing with the world’s views on sex, science, and other things can cause one to lose employment, go to prison, and even lead to death. But guess what? In all these things we are more than conquerors!

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39 KJV

“The one who is victorious and keeps My works to the end: I will give him authority over the nations — and he will shepherd, them with an iron scepter; he will shatter them like pottery, — just as I have received this from My Father. I will also give him the morning star. “Anyone who has an ear should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.” Revelation 2:26-29 HCSB

We must speak and teach God’s truth no matter how unpopular it is. Many lives are at stake. And our eternal reward is too great to throw away because of fear of man.

Always Be Joyful?

Always Be Joyful?

“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16‭-18 NLT

There’s always something to be joyful about, prayerful about, and thankful about. This is God’s will for us who belong to Jesus. How cool. Following this next verse will help us stay in a joyful, prayerful, thankful frame of mind:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8 KJV

God tells us to, “think on these things:” honest things, pure things, true things, etcetera. That means we have the power to choose our thoughts. Yes, we have lots of control over what goes on in our minds. Our brain is very powerful. God created it such. We don’t have to walk around depressed, miserable, and hopeless. We can have an abundant joyful life even in this wicked world. We just have to change the way we think.

JESUS THE GREAT PHYSICIAN

“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 KJV

Did you know that the definition of the Greek word for, “Repent,” in Matthew 4:17 means to change one’s mind for the better? It also means to make amends with abhorrence for one’s past sins, to think differently. I know people personally who have done this and have experienced for myself that until you do this you cannot have a joyful, thankful, state of mind. Yes, your spiritual and mental health is connected to you being honest about your past. This includes being truthful about morally wrong decisions.

Whenever a person obeys Jesus’ message to repent they are healed on the inside. They become a new person. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Their entire outlook on life changes. That’s what the word “Repent” means; to change your way of thinking. But it also includes abhorring one’s past sins. When people repent they can admit their former deeds that offended Almighty God. They’re not proud of them but they don’t sugarcoat them either. This affects the soul in a most positive way. When we sincerely pray to God asking Him for forgiveness He let’s us know that ALL OF OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN. When we come to God and our desire to repent is real, he also accepts us into His family. We’re adopted as children of God. (Colossians 1:13-14 Ephesians 1:5-8) Now that the barrier (sin) has been removed the believer in God through Jesus Christ has direct access to Him! God is the source of all Joy! And believers in Him are connected directly to the source! People can get happy about one thing or another. But only God gives lasting joy to His children. Joy is a fruit of God’s Holy Spirit:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, JOY, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

And who gets God’s Holy Spirit?

“We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” Acts 5:32 NIV

Are we starting to see the picture? Since God gives His Spirit to those who obey him, and since Joy (and many other good things) is the product of the Holy Spirit, all we must do is make it our goal to obey God. In doing so we will receive His Spirit, His JOY (and many other good things). This doesn’t mean we won’t have problems in life. Jesus plainly said we would:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV

When you belong to Jesus you can still have joy even in the midst of your troubles, yes! How is that so? Because you don’t think the same way you use to when you were without Christ. Your whole outlook is changed. God’s children learn not to focus so much on their troubles. Jesus teaches us how to focus on what our trials mean:

“BLESSED are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. “BLESSED ARE YOU when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. REJOICE AND BE GLAD, because GREAT IS YOUR REWARD IN HEAVEN, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:10-12 NIV

“CONSIDER IT PURE JOY, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be MATURE AND COMPLETE, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 NIV

People who TRULY follow Jesus teachings are not nut cases. They are some of the most stable people in the world. Would you call somebody crazy who treats you with the same dignity and respect they want to be treated with? (Luke 6:31) Maybe you would call someone nuts who is taught to love their enemies and actually does it. (Luke 6:32-36) But if you interviewed a slew of them and found out how much drama they avoid, and how many health problems they are free from that are caused by stress, and holding grudges, you might change your mind.

God’s formula for lasting Joy and peace remains. It is found in Jesus Christ. If you have already found Him (or more correctly He allowed you to find Him) obey Him as ruler and keep experiencing His Joy.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV

Lastly let me say this: there’s the misconception that having joy means you walk around with a smile on your face all the time. And the word, “Jesus,” comes out of your mouth every 5 minutes. That’s not what God’s joy means. The joy described in 1 Thessalonians 5:16 means to be glad, to be well, to rejoice exceedingly, to thrive. It is a calm happiness. It means to be spiritually well off.

Let’s Talk Spiritual Growth

Let’s Talk Spiritual Growth

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8 NIV

When we study the passage above hopefully we see there is no room for complacency. Though faith is so important that no one can please God without it (Hebrews 11:6), faith is one of the steps on our journey with God.

“So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in god. You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.” Hebrews 6:1-3 NLT

It is God’s will that all of his children, “Move forward to further understanding.” God knows better than anyone that growth takes time. So if you see areas in your life where you need to improve (all of us should) don’t fret. It is good that you want to please God. If we do not give up we will eventually become the people God is molding us to be.

ADD TO YOUR FAITH GOODNESS

It takes no effort at all to be bad, but it takes discipline to do what is good. In reality no one is truly good, only God is. (Luke 18:19) But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t imitate God’s goodness. When I think of the goodness of God this profound verse comes to mind:

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:43-48 KJV

ADD TO YOUR GOODNESS KNOWLEDGE

God tells us to add to our goodness knowledge. This is a deeper understanding of our Father. Hence we must study God’s word. In it we see just who God is, and who we are. He also shows us how to please Him and benefit ourselves. Because the truth is like a light that gets brighter and brighter our study of God’s word is a lifelong process:

“The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.” Proverbs 4:18 NIV

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105 NIV

Be sure to set aside time each day (if just a few minutes is all you have) to study our Father’s word and add to your goodness knowledge.

ADD TO YOUR KNOWLEDGE SELF-CONTROL

In today’s society everybody is trying to control someone else. Self-control is not popular. But it is a must to live the life of faith. A person with self-control learns to master his/her passions and desires, especially their sensual appetites. They have desires just like everyone else. But they are brought under the control of the Holy Spirit.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.” 1 Peter 2:11 NIV

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” Galatians 5:16-17 KJV

People with self-control are not slaves to their sinful cravings. SIn is not their master. They mess up sometimes. But they get back up. People with self-control when provoked to anger give gentle answers like this next verse says:

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1 NIV

ADD TO YOUR SELF-CONTROL PERSEVERANCE

One who has perseverence is said to have steadfastness, or stick-to-it-iveness. Perseverence in the faith means unswerving loyalty to God no matter what trial we are going through. And who is the greatest example of this? Hence the next passage:

“Fixing our eyes on JESUS, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:2-3 NIV

“For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” 1 Peter 2:19-23 NIV

Having perseverance doesn’t mean we only bear our trials, or just learn to put up with them. Perseverance means we learn to bear temptations the way Jesus did, following His example.

ADD TO YOUR PERSEVERANCE GODLINESS

Godliness is having very deep respect, awe, or reverence for our God. How could we not revere Him? He made the heavens and the earth and all that is in them! Pondering God’s greatness will keep us in awe of Him. He is the only person deserving of such. Being pious toward God is healthy. Meditating on his goodness warms the heart.

“I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? Psalm 77:11-13 KJV

ADD TO YOUR GODLINESS MUTUAL AFFECTION

Another way to describe mutual affection is brotherly love and kindness. There’s a special bond we have with our spiritual siblings.

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10 KJV

Shouldn’t we love fellow believers in Christ? Are we treating them like this?

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT

ADD TO YOUR MUTUAL AFFECTION LOVE

God is not redundant when he says to add to our mutual affection love. Remember, love is the greatest commandment:

“Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 NLT

“You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Now that’s some love. But didn’t God show this kind of love for us when He created us? When He gave His only begotten son to die for our sins? (John 3:16) Are we loving God like we should when we fill our hearts, souls, and minds with junk on TV? Or with wicked music? Is all of our strength and energy focussed toward showing love for God?

Jesus also said we must love our neighbors as ourselves. That means loving everyone. A simple way to sum this command up is with something else Jesus said:

“Do to others as you would like them to do to you.” Luke 6:31 NLT

As Jesus said, “There is no commandment greater than these.”

There are great benefits in adding all of the above mentioned virtues to our faith:

“For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:8 NIV
